Juxtaposing the introspective mournful strains of Joji’s track Past Won’t Leave My Bed, with a high energy melange of shaky cam cinema vérité, the promo was shot entirely using handheld cameras during a crazy trip across Canada and the US.
Blending vlog-style realism with sensational, high-octane hitchhiker antics, the film channels Breaking Bad, Jackass, and Blair Witch Project with traffic cops' body-cam footage and random animals and insects. The heady mix hangs together thanks to the intermittent unifying aesthetic of green-tinged, night-vision camera.
Every frame was captured by Eng and his collaborators, Andrew Michalko, Justin Morrice, Kevin Tseng, with no stock or archive footage, lending the whole fresh, eye-popping film a raw, decidedly human texture that defies the AI-driven era. Eng edited it with Justin Im and Fraser Wolfe produced.
