Most films aim to present their stories as moments of authenticity, inviting audiences to feel immersed in the scene rather than notice the artifice behind it.
However, for his touching festive film for Travelers, Snowstorm, SMUGGLER director Henry-Alex Rubin introduces a touch of Verfremdungseffekt, staging the blizzard on a blackout stage and keeping viewers aware of the reconstruction.
Working with TBWA\Chiat\Day NY, Rubin retells a true story of a mother and daughter stranded in a whiteout and the employee who brought them to safety - the theatrical set-up helping to highlight the humanity of the story.
