The multi-hyphenate artist and rapper hailing from East London Kojey Radical returns from a three-year hiatus with his gleaming new single Rule One featuring Bawo.

Teeming with a soulful and vibrant atmosphere punctuated with elements of funk and golden age hip hop, this latest release sees Kojey reflect on the lessons he’s learned over the years about money, love and respect. A sonic and lyrical tapestry lush with autobiographical easter eggs about Kojey’s own life, tastes (cc Notorious B.I.G.) and journey to deliver his message, he enlists West London’s rising star Bawo to add his own flair and thoughts to the rules for life, “Never let the money get the better of your back bone”. Kicking off an exciting Summer ahead, Rule One produced by Swindle (Ghetts, Celeste), Owen Cutts (Stormzy, Greentea Peng) and Ashton Sellars (Burna Boy) is the first taste of his highly anticipated new album, with details to be revealed by Kojey soon.

Speaking on the single, Kojey Radical shares: “Rule one is definitely one of my favourite songs on the project. After being gone for so long this record felt important. setting the rules early. I’ve always been inspired by what came before me, trying to find ways to honour the genre that afforded me a life. I fell in love with Southern hip-hop as my original introduction to rap, along side NY hip hop and I’ve always wanted to pay homage in my own way. Linking up with Bawo felt necessary, he’s quickly become one of my favourite artists of the past 5 years because of his uniqueness. Bawo is 100% and thats needed in music.”

To celebrate the release, he shares an incredible Relta directed video from The Corner Shop that unfolds in a seamless one take shot style visually panning through different rooms of Kojey performing, featuring Bawo and Swindle. Opening with Kojey running on a treadmill performing the chorus in a dimly lit room that provides the centrepiece of the video, it’s followed by further rooms/vignettes on opposing walls of the first room, one with Kojey performing surrounded by women listening to the song intently on headphones, and the other with Bawo and a group of young men taking notes. With each flicker between different rooms exploring the power of focus and dedication in life, the viewer gets the sense they are on the journey with Kojey through his mind and lyrics and he lays out his rules for life.
