On My Radar: Carol Markowicz
Madre director Carol Markowicz says her favourite TV show is a "philosophical masterpiece", appreciates good coffee, and is inspired by Romanian cinema, as she reveals what's on her creative radar.
What’s the most creative advertising idea you’ve seen recently?
I want to be a bit nostalgic and say I was showing a friend an old campaign by Starburst, the Little Lad commercial, Berries and Cream. It’s so nonsensical. I remembered I'm obsessed by that and how much I enjoy the tone; so free, so careless of being explanatory.

What website(s) do you use most regularly?
Online newspapers. It’s a fast world, impossible to keep up with the news, but I like to believe I’m doing it.
What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought?
A fast, portable charger, because I’m always running out of battery.
What product could you not live without?
Coffee. Can I consider that a product? Anyway, after you learn to drink good coffee, there’s no turning back.
What’s the best film you’ve seen over the last year?
Dreams (Sex Love), by Dag Johan Haugerud. It has a very sensitive gaze on a non-romanticised coming-of-age. Bold dark humour and note-perfect acting.
What film do you think everyone should have seen?
The Death of Mister Lazarescu, by Cristi Puiu, because it’s the darkest humour on tragedy, such as life.
What’s your preferred social media platform?
I don’t like social media, but I use Instagram.
What’s your favourite TV show?
Succession. It’s a philosophical masterpiece.
What’s your favourite podcast?
I love a Brazilian podcast called Calma Urgente (Urgent Calm). Very sharp commentary about politics and the world nowadays.
What have you been most inspired by recently?
Romanian cinema. Specifically from the 90s. Romanian complexities sometimes feel so far and so close to Brazilians. We are so different but so tied in the absurdity that reveals itself to be our day-to-day normality.
If you could only listen to one music artist from now on, who would it be?
Probably Caetano Veloso, because it can be moving in all the moods a human can experience.
If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?
More straightforward, faster meetings.
Who or what has most influenced your career?
I’m very inspired by many artists, but I can surely say that Pedro Almodovar and Nan Goldin are two important ones.
What scares you the most?
To lose curiosity.
What makes you happiest?
Traveling somewhere I’ve never been, writing a new page of my script that I think is good, my dog, and great food.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people wouldn’t know.
When I’m going on a trip, I only pack the night before. Otherwise Jorge, my dog, gets mad that I’m traveling and poops in my office room. So, he cannot know in advance!
