Val Thrasher: A Few Of My Favourite Things
The Abandon Editorial editor talks us through the old-school media, striking imagery, and all-important greenary that keeps her creativity flowing.
For editor Val Thrasher, visual media is clearly an inspiration essential, be it VHS, photography, or the good ol' DV cam.
A seasoned storyteller with a knack for uncovering the emotional heartbeat of every project, the Abandon Editorial has shaped campaigns for brands like Apple, Meta, Vans, and Honda, working alongside renowned directors such as Lance Acord and Phil Morrison; her work spanning comedy, dialogue-driven pieces, and visual storytelling.
Here, she shares the objects that fuel her creativity and keep her storytelling sharp.

The Photo Book
I LOVE photography books and old photos.
Photography has always been a passion of mine - it’s where I started before a friend of mine introduced me to AVID and editing took over my world.
There’s something about flipping through the pages that never fails to spark inspiration.

The Physical Media
I’m inspired by all kinds of media, and this random stack of DVDs and VHS is proof.
I’ve held onto them over the years, even though I don’t think I own a VCR player anymore.
Each one has a story behind it, whether it’s a film that helped shape my creative eye or a memory from a past chapter in my life.

The DV Cam
This little gem has been on countless adventures, capturing memories of family, friends and moments that might have otherwise been forgotten.
There’s something special about having old footage to look back on.

The Plants
I try to spend as much time outside as I can, so naturally, my space is filled with plants.
There’s something calming about them.
It reminds me to slow down and take a breath.

The View
If you know me, you know I love a good view.
This picture captures what I see from my desk on a clear night.
