Alice Phoebe Lou is a Mind Reader
The first installment released in a three-part visual series from Alice Phoebe Lou's new album Oblivion, directed by JOJX’s Jabu Nadia Newman.
South African-born artist Alice Phoebe Lou releases the official video for her single Mind Reader, from her acclaimed sixth studio album, Oblivion.
The cinematic short marks the first installment in the three-part visual series accompanying the record, directed by longtime friend and JOJX filmmaker Jabu Nadia Newman.
Shot in New York on 16 mm, Mind Reader captures the full spectrum of a relationship, from intimacy and connection, to moments of withdrawal and distance, using fluid timescapes, grainy texture and dreamlike vignettes. The film features TikTok duo Izzy Perez and Emma Fuente (TurtleWithHat) and reflects the ebb and flow that underscores Lou's songwriting.

“Alice and I have known each other since high school, and we’d always dreamed of collaborating,” says Newman. “Fast forward to now, meeting again as young adults in a Williamsburg coffee shop, it felt like the perfect moment to finally create something together. She shared Mind Reader with no brief other than wanting visuals for the album, and I immediately wanted to capture the sentiments, melodies, and mood of the song through a young New York couple. I loved that people unashamedly lived their lives on the streets. Couples fought in the subways, made out on park benches, and made the city alive with love and conflict.”
“Projects like this remind us how important it is for directors to play, dream, and experiment,” says Sevastí Buford, Executive Producer at JOJX. “Jabu approaches filmmaking with such emotional honesty, and that’s what allows her to create work that feels alive and why it resonates so deeply.”
Blending Lou's ethereal vocals with Newman's instinctive storytelling, Mind Reader is both intimate and cinematic, celebrating the joy and wonder of young love.
