Made with the support of Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, Tempomedia and RadicalMedia, and produced by Marco Henn, Alexander Kühn’s heart-rending film poetically portrays childhood trauma in the shadow of war.
Featuring astonishing performances by the child stars, the story follows 10-year-old Lika, who has fled Kyiv with her mother and little sister Daria.
Now in a refugee shelter, Lika tries to make sense of her new world through dreams in which she can fly. Flying becomes a coping mechanism – a symbolic escape from the horrors she’s seen and the fears she still carries: the sound of bombs, the fear of death, the longing for a father on the battlefield.
Shot across London, Berlin, Ludwigsburg, Stuttgart and Bochum, If I Could Fly blends live action with polished CGI to create a rich dreamscape that mirrors Lika’s inner world.
