Set against the breathtaking landscapes of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Egg Films director Zwelethu Radebe captures an uplifting story for mobile network MTN about a young South African boy reconnecting with his homeland.
Created in collaboration with M&C Saatchi Abel, the vibrant, narrative-led film follows the teenager and his friend as they visit his family in the countryside over the holidays.
Although rural life is hard and the cousins clash over their cultural differences – they nickname him ‘cheeseboy’ (township slang for someone who has money) – the boys slowly discover common ground and find ways to reconnect.
“Creating MTN Cheeseboy was a challenging yet rewarding journey. From casting to selecting locations and enduring the torrential rains of Kwa-Zulu Natal along with some unwelcome wildlife, every moment was memorable. Developing a brand ad centred around storytelling was a dream realised, made even better by the support of a collaborative team” says director Radebe.
