Director Daren Rabinovitch, one half of Encyclopedia Pictura, playfully blends imaginative costume design, comedic choreography and traditional techniques to craft this surreal promo for Noname’s track Hundred Acres ft. Devin Morrison.
The film sees the rapper cycling along the hazy streets of LA, unknowingly pursued by a dancer donning a fun, but slightly unsettling anthropomorphic cat suit. Through clever in-camera effects, Noname undergoes a magical metamorphosis into a vibrant green bird, and the two characters participate in a phantasmagorical, musical-theatre-eqsue dance sequence.
Rabinovitch says: “Noname embodies many contradictory feelings at once. She’s playful and serious, concrete and surreal, political and personal, earnest and ironic. These contrasts are at the heart of our video. We wanted to make something that could be lowkey yet ecstatic, mundane yet phantasmagorical.”
