Underhill signs director Sofia Cristina Alvarez

Alvarez’s work brings both a fresh perspective, and rhythm to Underhill’s roster.
Underhill continues to expand its roster with the addition of emotionally driven storyteller, director and cinematographer Sofia Cristina Alvarez.
Known for her visually rich, movement-oriented work shaped by a background in dance and performance, Alvarez brings a singular sense of intimacy and rhythm to the screen.
Raised in a small town in South Florida, Alvarez’s path into filmmaking wasn’t linear, and her biggest moments as a director haven’t come from the biggest sets. “They’ve happened when I took a risk on something personal, poured my whole self into it, and it resonated with others,” she explains. “When the work lands in someone else’s heart, whether it’s a client or a stranger, that’s the magic.”
Alvarez’s directing voice lives between the abstract and the real. Her work explores inner worlds, quiet emotion, and the richness of everyday life. Drawing on the chaos and closeness of her Cuban family, she creates imagery that feels tactile and honest. “I want my work to feel visually rich, emotionally honest, and to leave people feeling seen,” she says. “Most of my ideas start with an image or a feeling I can’t shake.”
Her ability to merge movement with meaning gives her a distinctive voice on set, where she thrives in collaboration. "What inspires me most is the collective energy of a set. When everyone’s in sync and working towards the same goal. There’s nothing like that feeling."
Alvarez felt that same energy in her first meeting with Underhill. “The connection was there, and I immediately felt a sense of trust, support, and alignment with the work and the team. I’m genuinely excited to grow with Underhill and I can’t wait to create meaningful work together.”
