Spindle has signed director Bonnie MacRae for representation in the UK and Amsterdam.
Known for her rhythmic, colourful, and darkly comic approach to storytelling, MacRae is gaining recognition for tackling important subject matter through a lighthearted yet stylistic lens.
Originally from Dundee, MacRae made her directorial debut in 2020 with Mind Yersel, a response to rising suicide rates in her hometown. The film gained widespread attention, featured on BBC Scotland, and was adopted by the NHS as part of a campaign to improve mental health training for healthcare professionals across the UK.
She went on to win Best Director at the BFI Future Film Festival for her micro-budget dark comedy All Up There, an immersive short exploring endometriosis and medical misogyny. The film has since screened in UK Parliament, The Vagina Museum, and won a Silver Screen at the Young Director Award in Cannes. Spindle has since collaborated with MacRae to develop All Up There into a 2025 awareness campaign for Endometriosis UK.
Since signing with Spindle in 2024, MacRae has completed her debut commercial for Heinz, Loved by Babies, Craved by Parents, a comedic campaign highlighting the irresistible appeal of the brand’s baby food range. Spindle has also produced her latest comedy short, Happy Birthday Daniel, in collaboration with Bacon. Starring Lizzie Davidson (Such Brave Girls) and Rhea Norwood (Heartstopper), the film follows a novelty birthday gift that continues to haunt a young couple post-breakup. The short is currently beginning its festival run.
Most recently, MacRae has been developing her debut TV project, FCKGIRL*, as she continues to establish herself as one of the UK’s most exciting emerging directors.
MacRae on joining Spindle: "Spindle feels like the perfect place for me to be, and I couldn’t be more delighted to join their roster. From the start, they have been incredibly supportive, and it’s amazing to be alongside directors I’ve admired for so long. I can’t wait to work with the team as my work evolves creatively."
Adam Javes, executive producer at Spindle: "Bonnie is the epitome of a natural talent. She has a razor-sharp wit and perfectly balanced sensitivity, both in her writing and directing. Over the last six months, it’s been clear that her ability to use humour and relatable everyday observations to explore serious subjects is truly rare. We feel very lucky to be part of her journey."
With this partnership, Spindle continues to expand its roster of distinctive, bold new voices in filmmaking.
