Directed by London-based filmmaker Seb Gillmore, this moving and reflective short documentary, titled UMBRA (The Shadow), paints a raw and honest portrait of ex-champion bodybuilder Dan Avasilcai.
Told through quiet and contemplative vignettes, and Avasilcai’s own words, the documentary sensitively traces how his relentless chase for an unnatural physique, fuelled by steroids and extreme discipline, pushed him to breaking point.
Gilmore reveals how Avasilcai’s hope of becoming a father ultimately helped him break free from destructive habits, with the quiet strength of parenthood piecing him back together.
