Created by Mother for Uber, this tearjerking film Close is sensitively directed by Michael Spiccia, through MJZ, and follows a young woman’s cab journey to see her father for Christmas.
Through the window of her ride from the airport, the familiar streets of her suburban hometown prompt her to recall past times with her father – from his tenderness when she was a tot who’d fallen on the ice rink, to her teenage dad-hating strops at the ice hockey pitch.
As she draws closer to the parental home, it becomes clear that their last encounter ended in discord and this trip is more a reunion than a mere festive visit.
The film’s heartstrings are greatly plucked by the soundtrack – James Blake’s cover of Fleetwood Mac’s haunting Landslide, a song that ponders poignantly on the uncertainty of change and the passage of time.
