Who will take the throne in Total War: Medieval III?
The spot The Throne was directed by Barney Cokeliss at Mad Cow Films.
19 years. That’s how long die-hard Total War fans have been waiting for a new Medieval chapter in their favourite video game franchise.
Creative Assembly’s announcement film The Throne has made a splash with the news. Half a million views in the first weekend and six thousand YouTube comments of a mostly ecstatic nature (“I am legit crying tears of joy”).
Written and directed by Barney Cokeliss. Produced by Mad Cow Films for Creative Assembly / SEGA.
“Working directly with a client can be liberating, especially when they’re in a creative field themselves”, says Cokeliss. “Dom Read and Davie Andrew at Creative Assembly knew exactly what they wanted to say but trusted me to come up with how. My pitch: five medieval monarchs, one throne, zero CGI spectacle. Just raw, direct-to-camera intensity from rulers who’ve clawed their way to power.

“Human faces are the most captivating things we can look at, our brains have a dedicated bit that’s just for processing them, so it didn’t seem a compromise to limit the film to one location and hone in on our rulers.
“I added some in-camera effects to give a bit of mystery and the feeling that the monarchs are addressing from us across centuries, to mess with the image, basically, in a way which I hope adds to the intrigue and the atmosphere.
“Mad Cow Films were legendary in getting this done despite cost limitations and put together an A-list team from our DP to our art, costume and make-up departments, our editor, composer, sound mixer, colourist, all top people, drawn to the project because it was a creatively exciting one. And that, ultimately, comes down to being given an inspiring brief by the client and the freedom to really run with it.”
