UK public votes for favourite commercial

The results of a recent poll conducted in the Sunday Times will be shown in a three-
hour ad marathon on Channel Four
this Saturday (29 April) from 9.05pm.

Presented by Graham Norton, The 100 Greatest TV Ads counts down the all time
greatest 100 ads as voted by the British public, in the first tv poll of its kind.

From the innocent 50s when the first ever tv ad was made for squeaky clean Gibbs SR
toothpaste, to the streetwise 90s where men can’t help acting on Impulse and running
off with each other instead of the girl in Britain’s first ever gay ad, advertisements tell
as much about the current culture and aspirations of society as they do the products
themselves.

In the programme all the ads will be shown, from one hundred down to the number one
greatest tv ad.

They will be mixed with behind the scenes footage and interviews with the advertising
industry movers and shakers who made the ads and the stars who feature in them.

Tony Kaye reveals how he got the dog, cat and mouse to behave in the Real Coal ad
and Alan Parker, who directed ads for Heineken, Hamlet and Birds Eye Beefburgers
talks about his revolutionary idea in 1974 to cast a kid with a working class accent in
the beefburgers ad.

Ad creator John Webster, set designer David Bill and jingle writer Cliff Adams reveal
how they made the Smash martians commercials; Griff Rhy Jones gives away some of
his secrets to writing a successful advert and psychologist Dr David Lewis explains
what many of our favourite ads really mean and why they work.

Here’s the alphabetical list of the UK’s 100 Most Favourite TV Ads. On Monday we
will bring you the winning order.
