When Doc Emmett Brown put a banana skin and half a can of soda into the ‘gas tank’ of the DeLorean in Back to the Future, the world cooed at the thought of powering vehicles with household waste.

But in 1985 no one could have predicted that, one day, cars would be powered by tweets.

The Mercedes Benz Tweet Race is underway, with four teams of two people desperately trying to be the first to reach the Super Bowl in Dallas, Texas. Each team has their own Mercedes and 1,400 miles to cover, which sounds easy, but there’s a catch...

The cars are powered by tweets from each team’s followers, with celebrity ‘coaches’ – such as Serena Williams – helping to drum up support. The more positive tweets the team receives, the more power is delivered to the car.

Let’s just hope they don’t become unpopular whilst driving on the freeway.
