Spoek Mathambo: Control
1st Prize Non European Music Video
Representation: orangefilms.co.za

When did you first pick up a camera?

Pieter: I was 12, it was an old Pentax my father gave to me for my birthday.

Michael: 20 years ago.

What does winning at the YDA mean to you?

Pieter: Hopefully I get a two-month Lexus commercial!

Michael: It is an amazing honour having work recognised by such an established organisation.

What was the most challenging aspect of making your video?

Michael: Adapt or die; one has to be prepared to roll with what happens. Filming is an organic process – we lost our location while we where shooting and had to find another location on the day.

Pieter: Not getting killed.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

Pieter: A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules from the Centre of the Ultraworld.

Michael: The creator of everything.

What do you think is the future of advertising?

Michael: I think advertising (because of technology) has become more accessible and clients are more open to ‘crazy’ ideas.

Pieter: I’m not really concerned with this.

What commercial do you wish you had made and why?

Michael: I don’t know which particular ads but there are several directors whose work I admire; Spike Jonze, Jonathan Glazer and Andreas Nilsson just to name a few.

Pieter: The two-month Lexus one.

Where do you hope to be this time next year?

Pieter: Retired.

Michael: Alive.

If I wasn’t directing I’d be…

Pieter: A photographer.

Michael: Teaching; it’s the best way to learn.
