In January 1992 ex-NWA gangsta rapper Ice Cube recorded It Was a Good Day, a feel good rap-song with a different vibe compared to his previous hardcore material. Over two decades later and a crowd-sourced charity drive has helped bring one of the track’s lyrics to life for children’s charity A Place Called Home via a Goodyear blimp.
Internet blogger Donovan Strain deciphered the song’s lyrics and worked out the day it was based around, 20 January 1992, and always wanted a way to celebrate Ice Cube’s ‘Good Day’. From there four creatives, Andy Dao, Michael Lopez, Jon Barco and Bryan Denman, the brains behind the idea, launched a charity fundraising effort for the South-Central LA children’s charity, centred around one of the song’s lyrics: “Even saw the lights of the Goodyear blimp and it read ‘Ice Cube's a Pimp’.”
This short documentary about the campaign was filmed by Tool’s Jason Zada and tracks the idea from inception showing how the idea received backing from the rapper himself and talk show host Jimmy Fallon and how Goodyear was also convinced to participate.
