In Production: Adrian Shapiro
Adrian Shapiro, executive producer at Australia-based Scoundrel, gives shots a glimpse into production down under.
How did you get into production?
I started off as a part time production assistant at Leo Burnett while studying at university. I do recall typing a lot of talent contracts (on the typewriter) and filing, but also going out on shoots with the producers and just being in awe of it all and wanting to be a part of it.
Tell us about an ad campaign you’ve seen recently that stands out for its production quality and standard…
It’s animated, but I loved and was quite moved by the Chipotle Mexican Grill The Scarecrow campaign. There is so much fluff out there in the advertising world, that when I saw this I was transfixed and it made me question my own consumer habits.
Do you feel the role of the producer has/is becoming more prominent and crucial today?
The role of the producer has always ultimately been that of a “realiser” and problem solver in my opinion, and I don’t think that will ever change. There are just different issues that need to be sorted through each job.
Tell us about a recent risk/investment you’ve made in your career or for your business?
Coming on board with Scoundrel has been a positive career change coming from a fairly solid freelance set up for the last four years. It’s an exciting investment and I have so much faith with my partners in the company.
How do you relieve stress during a shoot?
I try to get enough sleep and will often put on some music, close my eyes and tune out even if it’s only for 15 minutes.
How has the industry changed since you started working in it?
Many changes across the board. Integration between film production, the digital aspects, stills, everything. Not as separated as it all used to be and I guess one of the main changes we’ve seen is the adoption of digital formats almost entirely now.
What’s your favourite thing to do away from work?
Hang out with my family, spend time at the beach and play music.
What’s your most valued production tool (tech or otherwise) and why?
My calm disposition.
What would you like to see change in the world of production?
I would like to see the reintroduction of crews wearing three piece suits and flat caps on set.
