On My Radar: John Hassay
Good Egg's executive producer tells us what's currently on his creative Radar in this Q&A.
John Hassay is executive producer at London production outfit Good Egg and despite taking charge of advertising campaigns for clients such as H&M, his career has seen him commission and produce work for top acts in the music industry including Lily Allen, Metronomy and most recently Jessie Ware.
One artist in particular who has inspired his career is DJ and producer Norman Cook AKA Fatboy Slim who he helped create a unique live music video for last year and below Hassay tells us about working with the musician, as well as confessing his love of football stats on his Twitter timeline and what new piece of kit will be aiding him in the kitchen from now on.
What’s the best ad campaign you’ve seen recently?
Lurpak by Dougal Wilson is the best use of butter since Last Tango in Paris.
What website(s) do you use most regularly and why?
The Guardian for news; The Telegraph for football. Chris Bascombe is a guilty pleasure. I always have radio 4 playing on whatever computer I'm currently using.
What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought and why?
A slow oven. I spend all my spare time cooking. I'm yet to master this implement but am encouraged at the thought of slow confit-ing duck legs.
Facebook, Instagram or Twitter?
I was the Facebook don back in the day and got banned for overuse - they seemed to think I was a virus. It's all gone a bit 'police state' on there now with endless requests for irrelevant personal information.
It's all about Twitter for me now. I get information on cooking, restaurants, breaking news and deep football stats.
What’s your favourite app on your phone and why?
Uber. I can't understand what everyone is moaning about: cheap; convenient and they always get me home.
What film do you think everyone should have seen?
Nick Rowland's brilliant new short Group B, starring Richard Madden and Michael Smiley. Nick used to be a rally driver before he was a director and it drips with authenticity.
Where were you when inspiration last struck?
In bed, in the middle of the night. I have two glorious young boys so I tend to only get time to think when they're asleep.
What’s the most significant change you’ve witnessed in the industry since you started working in it?
Accessibility. When I commissioned Praise You for Fatboy Slim (director Spike Jonze) I didn't quite realise the revolution that was taking place.
It was actually the last days of disco for film and a digital blueprint for the 21st Century had been put in place. The whole shoot only took 20 minutes and I would enjoy a lot more like that.
If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?
More single bids for Good Egg.
What or who has most influenced your career and why?
Fatboy Slim. He was my landlord at university and demanded I return from MTV to commission his videos. Things went well there so I owe him a lot.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know…
I'm actually Irish.
