Female creative directors are a rare breed in the US. Three years ago, women made up just three percent of all creative directors… That is, until Kat Gordon came along.

Founding the 3% Conference in 2012, Gordon felt it was her duty to respond to this statistic, especially after she considered how much women spend as annual consumers – over $20 trillion globally.

Gordon spoke to shots in 2013 about why she set up the annual conference – to support female creative leadership in advertising agencies and reverse the expected marginalisation of women.

And although she has started to see some progress – women now make up 11 percent of creative directors in the US – she won’t stop until women take 50% of CD positions.

As she puts it, the goal of the 3% movement is to put themselves out of business. As quickly as possible.

This year, the theme of the two-day conference – which began today – is Brands on Board.

Each year, the conference attracts more participants and this year is no different. About 800 men and women from both agency and client side are expected to attend.

Topics for discussion at this year’s 3% Conference include changing gender attitudes in agencies; getting men to support gender equality – the manbassedors (see below); and benefitting from diversity.

 

 

Other themes of focus are female leadership, marketing to women and supporting women in advertising – which was covered today (see below).
