You may not know this, but tomorrow is World Soil Day.

Now before you start yawning, rolling your eyes or even moving the cursor and secretly trying to close the tab – hold it – 18 Feet & Rising and Aardman have each created supportive animations promoting the benefits of soil for UK charity Soil Association.

Now you wouldn’t want to miss that.

While it seems like every day marks some sort of World-something-Day, tomorrow’s event is kinda a big deal. Especially as pretty much everything we need for surviving comes directly from soil.

That’s right – food, water, climate, biodiversity and life itself.

This year’s theme for World Soil Day (WSD) 2015 is ‘Soils a solid ground for life’ – which has given creatives a chance to bolster the benefits of soil as the world’s most over-looked resource.

The campaign attempts to raise awareness of the importance of soil – especially considering the fact that it takes between 100 to 1000 years to form just 1cm of soil.

Aardman has created From Potato to Planet (below) – an animation that compares organic and non-organically farmed potatoes, in an attempt to sway shoppers into buying the soil-friendly option and educating the public about where veg comes from.

Soil Association is trying to increase soil organic matter by 20 percent in 20 years, but you can read more about that on their website.

18 Feet & Rising has created Sing For Soil, a fun-loving spot – with a catchy jingle from creative director Anna Carpen – and lots of adorable soil-inspired characters with missing teeth.

Tomorrow, the official celebrations will kick off at the UN’s food and agriculture organisation HQ in Rome but various countries around the world will also host smaller events. Click here to see what’s happening near you.
