It’s no secret that female filmmakers are often overlooked in the industry. But in a new competition launched earlier this year, the spotlight was turned onto these creators, thanks to the inaugural Broad Focus Lifetime shorts competition from A+E Networks UK’s Lifetime channel and Women in Film & TV UK (WFTV).

Following almost 200 entries, 20 films were shortlisted and then seven filmmakers were selected as winners by the jury. These include:

Adara Todd – Twiddly Things; which was her graduation film inspired by her experience working in a dementia care home.

Charlotte Regan – Standby; which premiered at 2015’s Toronto International Film Festival and is Regan’s first move away from music promos.

Lauren Morton – 3,217; Adventurer Morton documents her rowing trip around the world in which she broke two Guiness World Records.

Megan K Fox – GIRL; which focuses on female homelessness in South London, shot with a crew of just three. Fox’s showreel is shown below.

Rosie Gaunt-Mathieson – Raymond; about the politeness of strangers on public transport in the UK, which has since toured at various festivals including London Comedy Film Festival, Women in Comedy Festival and Latitude.

Ruth Sewell – Countryphile. Sewell is signed to 3angreymen Productions and has helmed promos for various charities. She is also working on other features, TV projects and documentaries.

Sarah CliftThe Good Mother; about a Mexican mother who puts her son before politics. Clift was also featured as a new director in shots’ issue #167.

The jury was comprised of the network’s members, including WFTV UK’s CEO Kate Kinninmont, director Destiny Ekaragha and A+E Networks UK general manager Heather Jones.

All these winning entries will be screened next Tues (Nov 22) at London’s Curzon Home Cinema, where the overall winner of the competition will be announced and handed £10,000 in prize money.

The remaining six runners-up will each receive £1,000. The seven winning films will also be broadcast on Lifetime TV at 10pm on Nov 30, on demand here after the screening next week and on the Lifetime website. And to find out more about the winning filmmakers, click here.
