On My Radar: Sorcha Shepherd
Sorcha Shepherd, managing EP at Caviar London, reveals what's on her creative radar.
What’s the best ad campaign you’ve seen recently?
I love Melina Matsoukas Nike Equality film. I’m usually all about fast pace and visual trickery in commercials, but this film takes it’s time, aided by a beautiful soundtrack and thought provoking voice over. It’s a confident and stunning piece of storytelling, beautifully crafted by to deliver an important message.
What website(s) do you use most regularly and why?
Amazon, basically for everything! I can buy all my kids' crap on there (when you have twins, there’s a lot of crap to buy) and I can watch TV and films on demand with my Prime account. Clever that!
What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought and why?
My old laptop died a few weeks ago so I got myself one of those super-pretty little Macbook 12" machines that you can have in either rose gold (it's totally just pink) gold or grey. I went with grey as everything in my house is grey, but I do keep accidently loosing it amongst all of the grey.
I chose it because I bring my laptop everywhere, so wanted something a bit lighter. However, the key’s are flat soI kep mystping stff.
What’s your favoured social media platform?
I’m quite old school, so still use Facebook more than anything! It covers everything I need, from keeping in touch with friends to being able to promote our work on our Caviar facebook page.
At least it’s not as old as Myspace,. Remember MySpace? I wonder what happenned to Tom..
What’s your favourite app on your phone?
Would you consider iCloud’s Photo Sharing an App? If so, then that! My parents live in Ireland and my brother lives in Australia, so I use it to send them daily pics or videos of my sons.
I really like the BBC news app too. I never have time to actually watch the news, so it’s a good place to get up to scratch with what’s going on outside of Soho.
What’s your favourite TV show and why?
I’m a sucker for comedy. After a long day I love nothing more than to laugh till I cry. That belly laugh feeling is so good for the soul. So at the moment it’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.
I watched all the sesons together a few years ago and have just watched them again. They are almost painful to watch because Larry David [below] is so brututally honest and grumpy, but oh my, does he make you laugh till you cry!
What film do you think everyone should have seen and why?
I guess I’m expected to say Shawshank Redemption, but I’m going to say School of Rock. That film is so feel good and charming you can’t help but smile when you think about it. I have watched it three times and all of them before I had kids! The cast are mostly children, but their performances are ace. Plus, I love anything with a music element, so be happy I didn’t say The Sound of Music.
Where were you when inspiration last struck?
It’s naff to say, but I am inspired every singe day by my work. And I know how lucky I am to say that, even if it sounds totally cringe.
What’s the most significant change you’ve witnessed in the industry since you started working in it?
Budgets! I started in the days where there was money to throw everything at a production! These days creative ambiton is still as high, but those budgets keep dwindling.
If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?
See above!
What or who has most influenced your career and why?
Jasper Thomlinson. He is one of my bosses and someone I ask for advice from daily. He has given me great confidence in my abilities to oversee our London office and he was the one who gave me the opportunity, so I literally wouldn’t be where I am without his support.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know.
I was a West Australian Irish Dance Champion. Pretty fierce, right?
