Here in the UK it’s National Beer Day and as the sun is shining, what better way to celebrate the nation’s alcoholic drink of choice - other than to have a nice cold pint - than to countdown some of our favourite beer spots over the last few years.

Guinness: Surfer (dir. Jonathan Glazer)

Not only one of the best beer ads, but surly one of the best ads full stop. Created by AMV BBDO back in 1999, and produced by Academy, the spot centred on a Polynesian surfer successfully tackling big wave surfing.

Stella Artois: Ice Skating Priests (dir. Jonathan Glazer)

Helmed by Jonathan Glazer, who also shot Surfer [above], the spot, which was filmed in Poland, required the Polish army to be called in to clear some of the snow on the lake. Surely that’s gotta be worth a free pint?

Budweiser: Born The Hard Way (dir. Chris Sargent)

Created by Anomaly for this year’s Super Bowl, the spot, which charts Budweiser’s immigrant founder Adolphus Busch’s journey to America, seems more apt that ever, considering the recent immigration controversy in the US.

Budweiser: Wassup (dir. Charles Stone III)

Any ad that can become a viral phenomenon before viral videos has to earn its self a place on this list. If you entered any school playground during the late ‘90s you were bound to hear a chorus of ‘Wasssup’ ringing out.

Bud Light: Dude (dir. Kenny Herzog)

‘Dude’; those four little letters may seem insignificant, but at the same time, they can mean so much, as this spot created by DDB Chicago shows. The word became as synonymous with Bud Light as ‘wassup’ did with Budweiser.

Carlsberg Pub Team (dir. Chris Palmer)

Continuing the long-running “Carlsberg don’t do….” campaign, this spot saw some of England’s greatest football legends, including Bobby Charlton, Jack Charlton, Bryan Robson, Peter Reid and Bobby Robson, join their local pub team. What’s not to love?!

Carlton Draft: Big Ad (dir. Paul Middleditch)

The pure scale of imagination is enough to earn this Aussie beer a spot on our list. Created by Y&R Melbourne it sees two choirs, one clad in maroon uniforms and the other in yellow, charge against each other to one of the best theme songs ever featured in an ad.

Newcastle Brown Ale: If We Made It

While some brands decided to put all their eggs in one basket and buy ad time during The Big Game, Droga5 and Newcastle Brown Ale had another idea. With typical wit from the two companies they decided to launch a viral campaign about what they would have made, but didn’t.

Carling Black Label: Dambusters (dir.Roger Woodburn)

A brave commercial for the time, and if released today would almost undoubtedly cause controversy, Dambusters was ranked at number 12 on UK broadcaster ITV's list of the Best Ever Ads, and has led to the brand being the UK’s best-selling beer since 1985.
