What’s the best promo you’ve seen recently and why? What’s the first promo you remember being impressed by?

Neither the most recent, nor the first that’s ever impressed me, but one that I always like to call on for inspiration would definitely be Nike Equality, directed by Melina Matsoukas.

And what’s your all-time favourite music video?

It’s hard to narrow it down to just one, but I’m going to say Rihanna’s We Found Love - also directed by Melina Matsoukas. Whenever I sit down to write a treatment, I watch one of Melina’s videos (normally this one), and boom. Inspired right away.

What other directors/artists do you look to for inspiration?

Director X, of course. And all things Melina Matsoukas.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I'm always rotating heavily between Daniel Caesar, H.E.R. [below] and SZA. Constant inspiration from those three.

What’s your favourite bit of tech, whether for professional or personal use?

Honestly, my iPhone calendar. Easily one of the most important tools in my life.

What artist(s) would you most like to work with and why?

Rihanna, Beyoncé, SZA [below] and Issa Rae. Because their music, their art, and their influence have each shaped me as an artist and as a woman, in one way or another.

How do you feel the promo industry has changed since you started in it?

We are at a pivotal point in humanity where storytelling, having a voice and using that voice right, is more crucial than ever. When I first started in the industry, this had only just began to rumble but now it’s hotter than ever, because Time's Up.

Music videos have had a resurgence of late; where do you see the industry being in five years’ time?

Led by women. Period.

Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know…

I'm an actor as well as a director!
