In a week with so much to see and do, we here at shots are happy to give you the rundown on what we believe are some of the must attend fringe events open to those without delegate passes at this year’s Cannes Lions.
Fireflies Arrival Party
Weds 20 June; 16.30; La Pantiero, Vieux Port de Cannes
Each June, plucky cyclists ride more than 1000km over 18 mountains in an astounding seven days. Crossing the French Alps and Lake Geneva to eventually arrive in Cannes, the team endure this crazy adventure to raise money for Bloodwise, a charity that funds research into leukaemia and blood cancer treatment.
To celebrate the monumental journey and welcome the riders to the festival, The Fireflies Arrival Party will take place at La Pantiero, so be sure to raise a glass as they cross the finish line!
VOWSS
Tues 19 June; 15.00-18.00; Cinema Les Arcades

Hosted by SheSays and The Voice of a Woman, The VOWSS screens a selection of the best short films, commercials, branded content, dramas, documentaries, art/experimental-films and music-videos created by women internationally.
Film screenings will be followed by live interviews and panel discussions, as well as opportunities for budding female creatives to scour senior creatives for mentorship. The evening will close with an award given for the best work in The VOWSS 2018.

Mr President presents LGBTQ+A
Monday 18 June; 16.15-17.00; Terrace Stage

If you've ever felt too embarrassed to ask a question about the LGBTQ+ community, Mr. President, through their work with Stonewall, has created the ideal opportunity to ask any question thanks to a session co-chaired by Amazon Echo Alexa. Attendees can submit questions related to LGBT issues, which will then be answered during the Cannes event, hosted by agency president, Laura Jordan Bambach, and diverse panel. Thursday 21 June; 15.30-19.00; JW Marriott Cannes
The CFP-E/shots Young Director Award is one of the most prestigious competitions in the advertising calendar. Taking place at the JW Marriott, the event will see the best new directorial talent awarded across a number of categories.
From 3.30pm, immediately before the prize-giving, a panel of advertising luminaries will take to the stage to discuss the creative relationships. Overseen by shots Editor, Danny Edwards, South African director Terence Neale and his creative partner, producer Rozanne Rocha-Gray, will be joined by Johannes Leonardo founding partner Ferdinando Verderi and adidas Originals' senior director, global brand marketing & communications, Jenny Pham, to chat about how trust, talent and togetherness can foster great work.
THe YDA is a ticketed event; for €20 (plus tax) you will gain entry to the panel and the ceremony, although student directors are exempt from the charge. Student’s running in the competition and wanting to attend should email hello@youngdirectoraward.com with the subject line: YDA Director Ticket.

Straight 8 Industry Shootout
Thursday 21 June; 10.30-12.45; Cinema Les Arcades

Straight 8, the film competition that asks creatives to make Super 8 films without any re-takes or post-production work, is set to return to Cannes Lions this year.
The competition sees adland’s best battle it out to make a three-minute film on Super 8, at this year's biggest ever event; seeing 22 companies deliver films.
Presented by the APA, in association with Cinelab London, Rothco and elevenfiftyfive, the screenings will take place at the Cinema Les Arcades in Cannes on Thursday 21 June. The cinema audience will then vote and the winning companies get to donate the prizemoney to the charities of their choosing.
