Bandito Brothers Adds Shane Hurlbut to its roster
Noted cinematographer brings feature and commercial experience, and willingness to explore working in new formats, to his directorial debut.
Bandito Brothers Launches Hurlbut as Spot Director
On the commercial front, he’s shot work for Visa, Coca-Cola, Verizon, American Express and Discovery, as well as promos for the HBO series “Big Love” and Deadwood among his notable credits. Hurlbut has also worked with music legends The Rolling Stones, Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins. He recently shot a Bandito-produced Navy SEAL narrative feature helmed by Bandito directors Mike “Mouse” McCoy and Scott Waugh. As a director, Hurlbut shot webisodes for “Terminator Salvation” and recently completed his first directing assignment via Bandito, "Diver," for the US Navy. He’s currently at work on his next spot assignment, co-directing a Loctite project with Bandito principal/director “Mouse” McCoy, via Cramer Krasselt. "It's a relationship that's blossomed out of the feature film," explains Bandito Brothers Executive Producer Jeff Rohrer. "Shane, Mouse and Scotty have spent eight months together. They're hardworking guys, filmmakers who push the envelope every time out. "Shooting features is extremely gratifying, and as I continue to do that it's something that will no doubt inform my work as a director on commercials," Hurlbut says. "Collaborating with artists like Mouse and Scotty has been a great inspiration."
"Shane has an unprecedented understanding of light," says Waugh."His passion for creating compelling visuals and pursing a non-traditional style of filmmaking fits in perfectly at Bandito Brothers." Beyond creating strong visuals, Hurlbut has looked at the bigger picture. "Regardless of the scope of the project, I've tried to bring a technologically advanced, fiscally responsible, and environmentally friendly approach to filmmaking," Hurlbut says, singling out his use of the Canon 5D DSlR as an example of all three. "Whether I'm dp'ing a feature or directing a commercial, why not employ something that uses three times less light, less manpower, and no chemicals to develop the film? Of course, the real evidence is in the final product." In Hurlbut's case, evidence abounds. In addition to several recent projects as a DP, including the Bandito feature and the spots for the US Navy, Hurlbut also directed an experiential project for Magic Mountain, all in the digital format. One of the first cinematographers chosen by Canon as an “Explorer of Light” (EOL) for his use of the Canon 5D, 7D and 1D cameras, Hurlbut recently completed "The Last 3 Minutes," a Canon-sponsored short showcasing their lenses and the new firmware update for the 5D that was shown at NAB. Hurlbut rounds out a Bandito Brothers roster comprised of Partners/Directors Mouse McCoy and Scott Waugh, director Stewart Hendler, directing duo Gentlemen and director/cinematographers Mitchell Amundsen and Vic Huber. |
