Set against stark landscapes and illustrative horizons, mandopop sensation Bibi Zhou fights her inner demons in Lunar, her new ethereal music video.

There’s a lot satisfying about watching someone move their body in strange and twisted ways. In Lunar, a cast of exceptionally talented dancers fight against the ropes that bind them through time and space. Each one is fastened to one of Bibi Zhou’s limbs, and she fights against the dancing demons, pulling against their tethers, trying to free herself. The haunting vocals paired over the percussive movements of the dancers creates a new topography for Zhou’s music.

As we get peeks into these other worlds that hold dancers, the landscapes feel both familiar and strange. The sky appears painted on, and Zhou’s costume seems to reference a celestial deity. Director Jodeb meshes the puppetry of Zhou’s orbiting dancers and her evocative performance well, creating a piece that allows us to consider the mythos of the world we’re watching. Part confessional, part cry for help, Lunar is a magnetic music video for an established and innovative artist.
