Steven Diller Signs With Station Film
Diller began his career doing video installations at art galleries in cities like New York, Mexico City, Vienna and Salzburg, a career he pursued after earning a Masters in Fine Art from Salzburg Art Academy. The director says he’s an admirer of such filmmakers as John Cassavetes and Ang Lee, whose work possesses a sense of immediacy and realism. In “Discovery,” a spot Diller directed for Sirius Satellite Radio via BBDO Toronto, he uses subtle touches in performance to tell deeper stories, like the awkward innocence of a first slow dance, a time-stands-still romantic moment under the moonlight and a sense of awe instilled by the power of the sea. “People become immune to a series of beautiful pictures,” Diller adds. “They need soul and depth to communicate a larger message.” Diller says he finds the playground of new media fertile ground for storytelling. He has directed memorable web films for clients such as Cazadores tequila, via David & Goliath. Titled “Border Crossing,” is a funny spoof on what appears at first to be newsreel footage of the BBC reporting on illegal border crossings. We soon learn, however, that the culprits are Americans sneaking in to Mexico to buy Cazadores. Clues like a culprit’s high-heeled shoe left behind in the night tell the story, as well as hilarious deadpan dialogue from a border guard who explains the Americans don’t have to cross the border illegally to buy Cazadores because it’s sold in their own country. In regards to the signing, Station’s Managing Partner Stephen Orent says, "It's a pleasure to be working with such a great filmmaker, who understands the business and has a real enthusiasm for pushing the bar creatively.” Diller was previously repped by MJZ, and is currently repped in Canada by OPC. In the US, Station is repped in the Midwest by Wry Wit and in the East by Miss Smith. |
