When I first came across Romain Laurent’s work, I felt the same excitement as when our industry discovered the genius of Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry; Effects that always had a purpose or a story to tell. And there was a lightness, a whit, an element of fun that I find here again with Romain,” says Little Minx Founder Rhea Scott, of her recent ‘Welcome!’ to the gifted artist.

Immediacy and response dictate the technique of Romain Laurent’s surreal and quirky gifs that he is now famously creating from ideas spurred on a whim, simply because Laurent felt they had to be so. He trusts his instincts, which seems to be propelling the genre forward for this luminous director, already well-known for his films and commercials on the international stage.

Joining Little Minx, Romain Laurent is a Director, Photographer, and many, many other things, who finds fantastical perspective and conveys it in his craft. Through fresh, energetic portraits, Romain isolates his pedigree with curious concepts that result in unique film.

Born and raised in the French Alps, Laurent nurtured a love of extreme skiing, and studied product design at the Ensaama National School of Applied Arts and Photography at Gobelins in Paris. He moved from Paris to New York more than six years ago, and to LA most recently, leaving behind the intensity of the city for the life-nature balance of theWest Coast.

“Alongside vast expanses of wilderness,” he says, “I appreciate the proximity to collaborate with creative souls. I feel able to quickly connect with possibilities in LA. When I met Rhea, it felt like we knew each other before. I am drawn to her vision and her angle on my work. She aims to present my skills as a whole, rather than segmented into photography, cinema-graph and film making.”

“My work is heavily influenced by European animation, comics, design, all fields in which my friends work,” says Laurent. “I think I have humor and sensibility that is more American; the blend of two cultures works in me.”

Romain Laurent lives in Pasadena, CA with his wife Clare and dog Maggie.
