Fight Gravity reboots Kraken Rum
The production company collaborates with creative agency Purple to tell the origin story of the Caribbean black spiced rum.
Production company Fight Gravity Films have joined forces with creative agency Purple Creative to create this thrilling spot that breathes new life into the origin story of Kraken Rum.
A truly international production, involving teams from Ireland, South Africa, Hungary and the UK, the project was described by Purple as “one of the most ambitious projects we’ve ever worked on”.
Hungary’s leading commercial director Rudolf Peter Kiss added a unique storytelling aspect to the project by creating a relatable hero figure for audiences to root for, as well as other memorable characters with believable backstories, to fulfil the brand’s wishes to create a world where the Kraken is considered ‘real’.
Kiss said, “I did extensive research for this project about the lives of the sailors. I tried to figure out what they wore, what was in their pockets”.

This attention to detail extended to the set build, recreating the interior of an 1870s ship similar to the Cutty Sark, accurately reflecting the brand's vision. The TVC is filled with Kraken ‘easter eggs’, catering to the brand's loyal fanbase that adores the intricate lore surrounding the Kraken.
To capture the most challenging shots, Fight Gravity enlisted the expertise of Dune Steadicam operator Attila Pfeffer, who utilised the Arri Trinity to simulate the movements of a ship, which was complemented by clever set design. The shoot took place at Budapest's renowned Astra Studios, home to popular series and films like The Witcher and The King.
The director hopes that the ad will subsequently spawn a series on the lives of the sailors: “I hope they will just go for a whole Netflix mini-series about these sailors and the Kraken”.
