Director Bjarke Underbjerg and new—land Copenhagen present Ambitions, a film about the consequences of being (too) ambitious.

Touching on past and future generations, this hybrid documentary examines what it means to be ambitious, shining a light on the darker side of what has usual been understood as an asset: by showing how ambitions can be directly linked to stress, anxiety and feelings of inadequacy.

Director Underbjerg said: "Ambitions is a personal project that started as an investigation of the younger generation: I essentially wanted to interview teenagers and young adults, very simply, to understand what sort of ambitions they have."

"The desire to do so began as I started reading more and more about the growing perfectionists culture and how there’s a growing pressure on the younger generation. A pressure to perform, to do more and do better, to have the perfect career, the perfect body, the perfect relationship, the perfect life. I wanted to understand how this affected their, all of our, mindsets.

As I began the interviews, I quickly came to understand how ambitions are directly linked to stress, anxiety and feelings of inadequacy. How people at a very young age are affected by the pressure to become a better version of themselves. As if they’re not good enough as they are.

I was prompted to think: do you control your ambitions? Or do your ambitions control you? As this question became the guiding light of the process, I sought to elevate the interviews by creating a visual poem that would show the link between ambitions and inadequacy.”
