Patriot Films signs Jabu Newman
Director Newman is widely recognised for her visually arresting work and deeply authentic storytelling rooted in South African youth culture.
Patriot Films announces the signing of Jabu Newman, one of South Africa’s most exciting young directors, to its Johannesburg roster.
Newman is widely recognised for her visually arresting work and deeply authentic storytelling rooted in South African youth culture. Her distinctive voice blends cinematic sensitivity with bold, contemporary expression, making her a standout talent in both local and global markets.
Her commercial portfolio includes work for major brands such as Adidas, Nando’s, and Standard Bank, as well as international collaborations with Anomaly, Park Pictures, and a continent-spanning campaign for Orange’s Maxit mobile app.
“It’s exciting to be starting this journey with Zayd Halim, Deenan Naidoo, and Anton Visser,” said Newman. “They understand where I’m coming from and where I want to go. I admire their work, but most of all I admire how they work.”
Currently working in Johannesburg, a city at the forefront of global trends in music, art, and fashion, Newman’s creative voice is deeply informed by her environment. However, it’s her ability to marry visual flair with compelling narrative that truly sets her apart.
“What caught our eye with Jabu is that while she’s visually outstanding, she also has a very strong narrative instinct,” said Deenan Naidoo, Executive Producer at Patriot Films Johannesburg. “She brings real warmth and authenticity to her work. We’re incredibly excited to partner with her.”
With this signing, Patriot Films continues its commitment to elevating bold new voices and championing fresh perspectives that reflect the richness and diversity of contemporary African culture.
