We speak with Pulse Films director Sinclair about some classic Kylie promos, filling the void left by MTV, and working on superhero movies.
What’s the best music video you’ve seen recently and why?
The music video for Kylie Minogue - Come into My World, although not recent, was for me a new discovery, especially Michel Gondry's making of, and is the one that sticks out in my mind right now.
The ingenuity of such a simple idea but executed to perfection, having Kylie and the background extras on a continuous loop in camera on a Parisian street corner, changing movements ever so slightly to create chaos in the background.

What’s the first music video you remember being impressed by?
I vividly remember my mum showing me The Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up as a teenager, she has great taste and this music video was brilliant.

And what’s your all-time favourite music video?
My all time favourite music video would have to be Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head. The opening of Kylie in that VFX car is what a classic music video is to me.
Or Marilyn Manson - Long Hard Road Out Of Hell. Two extremes.

What other directors/artists do you look to for inspiration?
There are so many directors I look to, but recently I would say Jonas Åkerlund for music videos and commercials, John Waters and Harmony Korine for aesthetics, Terry Gilliam for fantasy, Paul Thomas Anderson and The Safdie brothers for realism and Cronenberg for futurism.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Guitar Solo, No. 5 from the Dead Man movie soundtrack, on repeat.
What’s your favourite bit of tech, whether for professional or personal use?
My early 2000’s Mini DV camera.

What artist(s) would you most like to work with and why?
Lana del Rey would be a dream, I love the worlds and characters she creates. Always very cinematic.
How do you feel the promo industry has changed since you started in it?
I'm new to the business so I can't say, but I hope all is going well out there!
Where do you see the music video industry being in five years’ time?
I think everything works like a pendulum, it reached heights in the early 2000's and now with the loss of MTV I'm sure there'll be a new format to come along and preserve the artform.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know…
I left school at 15 and was 18 for a very long time in the Australian film industry, working on superhero movies in the Art department.
