Karl X Johan: Flames
Joint 2nd Prize European Music Video
Representation: campdavidfilm.com

When did you first pick up a camera?

My brother and I started to use my dad’s VHS editor at home when I was about 10. I recorded hockey games from TV and started to edit them together with other stuff that we had on tape. It had an AUX input as well so you could put music over the images. I guess after a while we ran out of material to edit so we started to shoot our own.

What does winning at the YDA mean to you?

It’s a very wonderful opportunity to showcase a piece of work that I am proud of.

What was the most challenging aspect of making your video?

Creating enough footage to never slow down the tempo. We planned the shoot for one day.... and ended up with four days.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

Mum and dad.

What do you think is the future of advertising?

I’m excited about how branded content is becoming more important. It’s nice to see how brands are
taking it more seriously and are ready to invest.

What commercial do you wish you had made and why?

I really enjoyed seeing Barnardo’s Break The Cycle last year in Cannes. I was stunned by the simple idea, editing and execution.

Where do you hope to be this time next year?

I’d like to be some place warm.

If I wasn’t directing I’d be...

Probably running a hotel at a ski resort.
