With clever nods at all kinds of headlines that came out of 2020, from murder hornets to literal dumpsters on fire, Match Made in Hell is bold and ridiculous.
The film shows a sad and disaffected Satan ruling over his firey domain with no joy at all, until he swipes right on the lovely year 2020. The two go on dates in empty stadiums, feeding each other hot peppers, and steal toilet paper out of public stalls, all the while they're serenaded by Taylor Swift’s song, Love Story.
Helmed by Ryan Reynolds and his team at Maximum Effort, the piece is wonderfully silly and only slightly cathartic, as we all recognize just what a hellscape 2020 has been. Although the actor turned...everything, I guess, decided to stay behind the camera, his humor is clear through the entire film, hinging on both absurdity and the over-the-top chthonic characters.
