Confronting the expectations, realities and challenges of motherhood, specifically Black motherhood, is this uncompromising yet tender short from Greatcoat Films director Anna Fearon.
Commissioned by Channel 4 to celebrate Black History Month, the visually and emotionally striking film tells its story with interviews and voiceovers of various mothers; from embarking on motherhood in pregnancy all the way through to grandmothers; covering topics such as dismantling stereotypes, navigating motherhood and sitting down with a child to talk about race.
Discussing the opportunity, Fearon notes: "Through Motherhood I wanted to explore the nuanced and honest experiences of Black motherhood. It is stories like these that I choose to tell because we need to be seen in a light that is multifaceted and complex. To honour our stories, that have historically been erased and misconstrued."
