Biff Butler gets to WORK
Currently based in Los Angeles, Biff will be represented globally and serve as Creative Partner at Work Editorial.
Growing up in the UK, Biff spent his youth immersed in music. He moved to Los Angeles as a musician in 1999, releasing albums and touring the country.
He became intrigued by the craft of editing, inspired by the brilliantly put together title sequence for the movie Se7en cut by Angus Wall at Rock Paper Scissors. Following the break up of his band in 2005 Biff got a job at RPS, which he refers to as his film school. There he found his editorial voice and discovered another interest in advertising.
Within a couple years he was making spots for Nike, Microsoft, Lexus, Adidas, and in 2008 he made a breakthrough with the Emmy Award winning Obama/will.i.am video Yes We Can.
By 2012 his clientele spanned across both coasts and after moving to New York he went on to collaborate on some of the era-defining work coming out of the U.S. at the time, with W+K NY, Anomaly and BBDO amongst others. Most notably perhaps was his involvement in the Derek Cianfrance / Dicks Sporting Goods campaign that truly defined a style in sports commercials. “I’ve always had an interest in advertising and the process,” says Biff. “I love watching a campaign roll out and seeing it permeate the culture. I still get such a kick out of coming out of the subway and seeing a huge poster from something I’ve been involved with.”
Biff is well recognised for his work, having won numerous times at AICE, the Clios, Cannes Lions and receiving an Emmy for the captivating and highly regarded six-part documentary "Long Live Benjamin" that he edited and co-directed with creative director Jimm Lasser. He enters this next phase of his life with a commitment to learning from those around him and to help guide those equally eager to learn. It is the openly collaborative and creative atmosphere of WORK that drew him there.
"To be listed amongst the editors of WORK is to be listed amongst the best,” says Biff. “WORK is synonymous with quality and craft, and I feel that my skills will continue to evolve and flourish in the environment they have created.”
“I am so thrilled and excited that Biff is joining us,” says Jane Dilworth, Founding Partner at Work. “I have always been aware of Biff and the great work he does, he is an editor with great feeling and instinct that not only works for the director or creative but what is right for the job.”
