Often biases are invisible until we are shown otherwise. Sometimes, they come up and smack us in the face at a bar when we’re just minding our own business.
This series of interviews for Bumble dives into some of the struggles people of color run into when dating that white people often don’t have to think about. From lines like “I only date Asian women” to “I don’t see color,” microaggressions and subtle racism infect the dating pool, souring the water. As people chat candidly about their experiences, they tackle topics of masculinity, intimacy, projection, and connection during a pandemic.
Dating These Days, directed by Laura Scrivano and produced by Missing Link Films, is a video that was worked on primarily by women, with a large rate of women of color working behind the scenes as well. Working with agency Mr. President, Scrivano was able to create an intimate environment that allowed the people on camera moment of reflection and connection, resulting in a unique and honest video that shows how far society has to go.
