Every year, 17 million people in low- and lower-middle-income countries die from conditions that could be treated with surgery, lives lost simply because care is out of reach.

Reconstructive surgery is not a luxury; it is a vital medical intervention that restores health, dignity, and opportunity. Yet, it is still often misunderstood as purely cosmetic.

The Closing the Gap campaign, led by Ogilvy Health New York and ReSurge International in partnership with Papaya Films, seeks to challenge these misconceptions and highlight the transformative power of reconstructive surgery. This initiative emphasises that reconstructive surgery is about survival, resilience, and second chances, not appearance.

At the campaign’s heart is a powerful three-minute documentary filmed in Nepal, produced by Papaya Films, directed by Mateusz Miszczyński and lensed by Jakub Stoszek from Papaya Films’ roster of talent. Through raw and evocative storytelling, the film contrasts two worlds: one where plastic surgery is a choice for aesthetic enhancement and another where reconstructive surgery is a life-saving necessity. It captures the resilience of patients whose lives have been changed by this care and the dedication of local surgeons trained by ReSurge International. The film is accompanied by photography by Isabel Pinto, adding depth and humanity to the campaign.

“We live in times where narcissism often distracts us from the beauty around us”, said Mateusz Miszczyński, the film’s director.

“For me, this project was about rediscovering that beauty and the incredible strength and resilience found in unexpected places. Through the film, we aim to inspire compassion by showing the profound impact reconstructive surgery can have, physically, emotionally, and socially.”
