Let me give you some symptoms: loss of appetite, lagging energy, sleep issues, panic attacks. So far, so Covid.
However, as starkly explored in this beautifully shot film for Santé Publique France (SPF), what may be true for the virus could also be true for one of the other fallouts from the pandemic - mental health issues.
Following four ordinary individuals struggling to cope with the everyday, En Parler, c’est déjà se soigner (Talking Makes It Better) from Paris-based agency Babel brings to life a recent study by SPF (Coviprev, March 2021) that revealed that in the past year, there has been a deterioration in French mental health: 31% of people having experienced anxiety or depression compared with 23% last September.
Empathy is drawn through Birth director Vincent Rodella's sensitive handling of the subject, achieving empathy without being mawkish or melodramatic. “It was important the film touched as many people as possible,” Rodella explains. “I owe it to those suffering from anxiety and depression to be as truthful as possible, to convince them that it’s OK to talk about how they feel.”
