While most drink driving awareness ads rely on emotional impact and shock tactics, the New Zealand Transport Agency’s recent campaign taps into the laughable justifications of those who make irresponsible choices.
Created by FCB and directed by Max Barden through The Sweetshop, the spot follows a young man who enjoys a few pints with his pals, then heads to the loo before driving home. He’s then unexpectedly met in the cubicle by an eccentric actuary who helps him guesstimate whether he's over the limit.
While light-heartedly shining a light on the ridiculous ‘booze maths’ people might do to justify drunk driving, the ending reminds the audience that their excuses won’t save them if they get caught at a NZ Police checkpoint.
