McElhenney is the co-creator, show-runner, director, writer and star of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The long-running series was renewed for a thirteenth and fourteenth season last year with FX.
In addition to directing episodes of Sunny, Rob also helmed an FX pilot starring comedian Bill Burr, Pariah and Danny DeVito & The Contract. In 2014, pitching with a four-minute test reel, he closed a deal with Legendary Pictures to make his feature screenwriting and directing debut on the family action project Figment. Minecraft, which was acquired by Warner Bros. on the heels of the studio’s success with The LEGO Movie, selected McElhenney to direct its next film franchise.
This is Rob’s first foray with commercial representation as a director.
