Sony captures the right whale at the right time
Wildlife photographers Cristina Mittermeier, Paul Nicklen and Oscar-winning DP Emmanuel ‘Chivo’ Lubezki use the tech brand’s new BURANO digital camera to shoot an important film about our fragile ocean.

Our planet is in real trouble, but we still have time. We must work together to prevent the loss of amazing species, like the Southern Right Whale," says marine biologist Mittermeier in The Knowing, a touching film produced by Park Pictures for Sony.
Hunted to near extinction in the 19th century, the species has barely begun to recover before facing the new threats, such as polluted waters, seismic blasting and ship strikes. Now is the time to act.
To help tell the whale’s story, the filmmakers travelled to Western Australia with the new Sony BURANO, which uses the high image quality of the VENICE camera system and allowed them to capture the Southern Right Whale and a newborn calf underwater in low light.
Cristina Mittermeier and Paul Nicklen are co-founders of the marine conservation organisation SeaLegacy.
