The Future is Forwards opens with flame. As we travel out of the car engine, we see all the things that make travelling horrible. Car crashes, cramped public transit, and traffic all hold up progress. Using a clever reverse shot on all the folks using cars, there’s one person who moves forward; a young woman on an e-bike, effortlessly doging the chaos of a city center in gridlock.
Shot by Amsterdam-based production company HALAL’s director Paul Geusebroek, the film feels like a breath of fresh air, with shots lingering over the e-bike’s slick lines and effortless movement. Using meticulous camera and character choreography, Geusebroeke created a film that makes it all look easy.
