Adapted from a novel by Kayt Burgess, We Forgot to Break Up shows vulnerability and strength, allowing space for trans people to be imperfect and apologetic.

Evan arrives in the green room ahead of his old band, walking around, looking over the instruments. He leaves a manuscript on the table before quickly snatching it up as someone walks in. The scene that unfolds is tense and sad, as people alternate in between recognizing Evan and deadnaming him, creating a moment that feels intimate and horrible at the same time. We Forgot to Break Up is about relationships, endings, and not-endings, leaving things unsaid and coming back, ready to finally say those things.

The film is brutal and emotional and allows for a very visceral, powerful scene where the band plays the song “We Forgot to Break Up,” (deftly implied to be a song that’s not on the set list) as Evan watches from the audience. It’s a stunning move that can’t be replicated in fiction, and the film fully commits. Directed by Chandler Levack, and written by the same with help from Steven McCarthy, the film feels real and intense. The editing is sharp, full of beautiful shifts and tones, and fraught with sharp edges.
