When Wu-Tang Clan remixed Texas’s Say What You Want track in 1998, and traded verses with Texas singer Sharleen Spiteri, the collaboration went down in history.
And now, they’re back. Hi stars Kadeem Ramsay as an obsessive fan who has spent nearly 15 years collecting crossover merchandise and planning to get the two bands back together. As he speeds down a country road it’s revealed that he’s kidnapped Sharleen in the hopes of instigating a reunion. The humorous ending is a neat little twist, a fun bow-on-top finale that suits the energy of the piece.
Hi balances both an upbeat melody and fast rap with an appealing main character that we want to root for and as fans, deeply identify with. Director Fenn O’Meally allowed Ramsay room to play with the character, creating a fun and engaging narrative. The film is moody and rural with slick editing and a DIY/found-footage feel, even with the excellent production from SMUGGLER’s team.
