Horror is potentially the most sub-genred of all cinematic types: gothic, supernatural, psychological, folk, survival, slasher, even rom-zom-com providing their own distinct offerings.
One sub-genre that is finding a renaissance online is the relentlessly creepy 'Analog Horror'; an appealing technique for idea-heavy, budget-poor content creators due to its typically low-fi presentation and reliance of atmosphere over effects.
Recognising the resurgence whilst also giving it a unique spin, YouTube has teamed up with creative studio Entropico to create The Analog Horror Project - an interactive horror experience that messes with storytelling norms and tropes for maximum audience engagement ahead of Halloween.
Presented by Spencer Lackey, himself a popular content creator in the genre, the film initially appears to be a straightforward micro-doc on the topic, with Lackey providing notes on some of his favourite pieces in a typical vlogger fashion.
However, it doesn't take long for the eerieness of the examples to creep into the film's narrative itself, creating an unsettling mash-up of authenticity and artifice.
Smartly paced, well-performed and not shy of genuinely giving us the heebie-jeebies, as well as incorporating some smart ideas like hidden links within the video that lead to bespoke content submitted by top Analog Horror creators, this deceptively innocent short is likely to leave us with a few nightmares.
