Colorado Denim: Studies On Hysteria
Our goal was to create a short film where the boundaries between advertising and entertainment were blurred as much as possible. Matthias had this picture in his head of a naked crowd chasing a guy wearing trousers and we all went, ‘Yes! That’s it!’. Gabriel went to a Catholic school so he pitched in the perfect antagonist to the story, a priest. And a few years ago Bernd was harassed by an old naked lady at a nudist camp in Croatia for wearing trousers, so this was a great opportunity to come to terms with the experience.
The production was planned more like a short film than a commercial. The intention was to create a satirical short and show how it could also be used as a commercial that people would actually enjoy watching.
More people are spending time online rather than in front of a TV, and they have a need for two things: communication and entertainment. On the web, there’s less space for traditional advertising so the solution is to provide content that feels like it’s not there to advertise, but is sponsored by advertisement. On finishing the concept we asked around to see if there were any denim companies interested in sponsoring our project. With Colorado Denim we found a partner that was happy to support us with some money but didn’t interfere in the production, and they really liked the movie at the end.
We shot for four-and-a-half days at two open-air museums near Stuttgart. In order to get the shooting done in that time with a tiny budget, we had to plan every detail thoroughly. Matthias storyboarded every shot and after the shooting Bernd took over the editing.
Gabriel was in charge of casting and it was quite clear that finding nudes was going to be tricky. We all agreed that the protagonists had to be real actors as they needed to express everything without saying a word, so the challenge was to find five professional actors who would act for free and naked.
We also thought it was our duty to strip down ourselves. We call this ‘naked solidarity’. If you think you found the scene, take a screenshot, name our butts and send it to us. The first one who does will receive a special edition DVD for free!
